text

Albin is a self taught painter. He was born in Antwerp (Belgium) in 1974 and currently works and lives in Brussels.

His early works depicted landscapes and interior sceneries gradually inhabited by human forms. The resolution to dig the art of human nature took shape.

His paintings instantly overwhelm the viewer where his subjects seem to communicate a silent distress and a mysterious melancholy.

Skilfully executed, they frequently depict a lone figure in a dreamlike space. Their presence conveys a sense of sorrow and silence and a shifting sense of bond and detachment develops between the viewer and the figures. The subject’s proportions combine realistic observations with exaggerated characteristics of particular human features. The atmospheric rooms that contain the scenes are often enclosed, creating a claustrophobic feel that echoes the personage grief.

These hunting images contain an inner drive and an external force that will print an emotion in the viewer’s mind long after seeing them. Despite the absence of any obvious misery, these works induce a sense of unease to the viewer, confronting us with our own internal impasse. They communicate with a bold visual language a sense of intimacy and loneliness.

Albin’s works may seem obscure but can also be viewed as a personal mockery of the humankind that is humorous and which reflected the outrageous personality of this extraordinary artist.

Albin is also the author of two books of poetry in his native language French ("Griefs" and "Les Abîmes") and sings some of his poems with his band Catafalque.
